We believe a successful business expects and depends on competitive pricing, quality service, reliability and trust, therefore, to ensure our customers needs are met, we take pride in achieving this every day. This philosophy has driven 1st Waste Management Consultants Ltd. to become one of the UK’s premier consulting companies within the waste management industry.
We entered into a contract with Help the Aged prior to their amalgamation with Age Concern England.
The client’s key objectives were to consolidate their waste collections and streamline their billing and invoicing, along with reducing their overall costs and increase their ability to recycle. Quite a challenge, but one we were committed to helping them achieve.
Throughout the organisation of their waste collections, we ensured they were receiving the services that they required, and then we set about reducing their waste by entering into a commercial partnership with a key provider of recycling to the charity sector.
Our combined efforts led to Help the Aged reducing their waste costs by almost a third.
In addition, we supported them to increase their revenue by gaining the best prices for their recyclable products.
Our waste audit process and support created a saving of £143,000 per annum and we were awarded the ‘Best Partnership Project for Recycling’.
Awarded in 2017
We entered into a waste management contract with Shepherd Neame in August 2015 which is still in place today.
A number of key initiatives were introduced at the outset to reduce waste to landfill by increasing recycling volumes.
To meet the client’s objectives a number of robust processes were introduced including a comprehensive audit programme to survey 80 sites in a jointly agreed timeframe. The audit programme identified a number of opportunities which were taken on board by Shepherd Neame senior management and implemented in 2016.
Throughout the contract we have successfully managed complex issues in association with Shepherd Neame including industry overweight charges and Covid 19 which entailed opening and closing sites at short notice.
In the early days, Shepherd Neame were recycling 76% of waste produced by their pubs we are now at 98% recycling with a zero waste to landfill target in place for 2022/2023.
To meet Shepherd Neame’s ongoing environmental support programme new initiatives are being introduced including;
In April 2022, The Club Company extended their contract with us. We have been working with The Club Company for 8 years now and this case study provides evidence of our partnership approach to contracting.
An intrinsic part of the new contract is to reduce waste costs but also to improve The Club Company’s ESG performance and sustainable practices across their portfolio of 15 golf and country clubs.
In the first instance, we performed a Weight vs Volume project diverting the heaviest of waste streams, such as glass and food, from the general waste streams. By increasing the food recycling, we not only reduced costs on overweight bins but also diverted the food waste to specific Anaerobic Digestion plants enabling the full closed loop recycling of this valuable resource.
Subsequently, we undertook a Revenue vs Waste project which looked at their best performing site and their waste capacity and rolled this out across their estate of clubs to perform service changes and amendments in line with each site’s revenue performance. This resulted in significant savings on the company’s waste costs.
As a result of these projects, we attended each of the 15 sites and carried out an internal waste audit, looking at the sites internal processes, with a view to diverting as much as possible of the recyclable products at source.
We also carried out a “Dumpster Dive” at the groups busiest site. This involved an in depth look at exactly what is making up the waste volumes in the containers. Each waste stream was segregated and weighed so that we can see exactly what the sites are wasting and where.
We feed back all of the findings with recommendations that has led to further reductions in general waste production and increasing recycling figures resulting in further financial savings and improvements in their sustainable practices.
We continue to work closely with our client on the pending recycling legislation to develop solutions for the Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) and the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). The aim is to ensure that The Club Company achieves as much benefit out of these schemes as possible and makes progress toward waste avoidance as well as improved recycling levels.
